The gas content of peculiar galaxies: counterrotators and polar rings

چکیده
This paper studies the global ISM content in a sample of 104 accreting galaxies, including counterrotators and polar rings, which spans the entire Hubble sequence. The molecular, atomic and hot gas content of accretors is compared to a newly compiled sample of normal galaxies. We present results of a small survey of the J=1–0 line of CO with the 15m SEST telescope on a sample of 11 accretors (10 counterrotators and 1 polar ring). The SEST sample is enlarged with published data from 48 galaxies, for which observational evidence of counterrotation in the gas and/or the stars has been found. Furthermore, the available data on a sample of 46 polar ring galaxies has been compiled. In order to explore the existence of an evolutionary path linking the two families of accretors, the gas content of counterrotators and polar rings is

متن کاملGlobal structure and formation of polar-ring galaxies
We present an analysis of structural features of all known galaxies with optical polar rings. We find a clear dichotomy for objects of this peculiar class. Bulge-dominated S0 galaxies possess only short narrow rings, while disk-dominated objects always have wide extended polar rings. We try by gas dynamical simulations to explain such a segregation by dependence of the ring-forming process on d...
متن کاملStar Formation in Polar-Ring Galaxies
Polar-ring galaxies are systems with two nearly orthogonal rotational axes, and are therefore clearly the result of galaxy-galaxy interactions. The host galaxies of polar rings are typically gas-poor early-type systems. The rings themselves, however, are typically gas-rich, blue, starforming systems. They have traditionally been modelled as the remnants of accreted dwarf irregular galaxies. Pub...
متن کاملA new catalogue of ISM content of normal galaxies
A new catalogue of ISM content of normal galaxies. Abstract. We have compiled a catalogue of the gas content for a sample of 1916 galaxies, considered to be a fair representation of 'normality'. The definition of 'normal' galaxy adopted in this work implies that we have purposely excluded from the catalogue galaxies having distorted morphology (such as interaction bridges, tails or lopsidedness...
متن کاملFormation of a polar-ring galaxy in a galaxy merger
We numerically investigate stellar and gas dynamics in star-forming and dissipative galaxy mergers between two disk galaxies with specific orbital configurations. We find that violent relaxation combined with gaseous dissipation in galaxy merging transforms two disk galaxies into one S0 galaxy with polar-rings: Both the central S0-like host and the polar-ring component in a polar-ring galaxy ar...
